Sparhawk School stands against the violence aimed at Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. We are deeply saddened by the recent killings in Atlanta. Though this tragedy has been highly publicized, crimes against AAPI-identifying people, especially against women and elders, have seen a rapid increase over the past year. According to the leading aggregate source of anti-Asian hate incidents, Stop AAPI Hate, 2,808 firsthand accounts of anti-Asian hate from 47 states and the District of Columbia were reported between March 19, 2020 and December 31, 2020 alone.
Hate has no place here at Sparhawk. As an institution dedicated to our ongoing effort to become anti-racist, it is our responsibility to name and condemn this violence. We stand with our Asian families and the Asian American Pacific Islander community as a whole.
TAKING ACTION
Here are anti-racism actions you can take to help change the tide of anti-Asian racism in the United States.
- Educate children and ourselves about the history of anti-Asian racism in the United States. Learning from the discriminatory practices of the past can inform the anti-racism practices of the future. Here are some helpful resources:
- Help protect our community members with the following actions:
- Take a bystander intervention course to help stop anti-Asian and xenophobic harassment
- Offer to escort AAPI community members to the grocery store or running errands. Those most vulnerable are the elderly, women and children.
- Stand up and advocate for the victim if you witness racist behavior. You can first report it to the local police by calling 911, and then you can report it to the FBI.
- Support Asian American run business in your area. Use google maps, and search for Asian American owned restaurant, store, etc. to find locations near you.
- Donate to organizations supporting the AAPI community, such as:
