Program Features

Sparhawk School’s 8th grade (LEAP) is located in the High School at the Upper School Campus. LEAP (Learn, Explore, Achieve, Participate) is a program that offers you a head start on developing the skills necessary for success in high school. In addition to LEAP (8th-grade only) classes in English language arts, math, study skills, activity & science, you will be immersed in high school classes in foreign languages and the arts.

As a LEAP student, you will have access to more than 20 extracurricular offerings and will participate in off-campus LEAP excursions. In the past, LEAP excursions include ropes courses, hiking, picnics, rock climbing, and service projects. The LEAP program provides a good mix - socially and academically.

As a LEAP student, you will be placed in some academic courses with other 8th-graders. Two of these classes are Language Arts and a foundational LEAP science class. LEAP science emphasizes understanding lab procedures, doing experiments, and science writing. You will also learn time management skills in LEAP study skills class and LEAP activity class.

LEAP students attend art and world language classes, clubs and extracurricular (clubs) offerings with high school students. If you qualify for higher level math classes and/or world language classes, you will be able to take high school classes in these subject areas also. Please note that you will be required to take placement tests to determine if you are ready for these advanced classes.
