#MyAmesbury #MySparhawk

Our small, but thriving town is getting some much needed publicity right now!  Amesbury has always been "that little engine that could", but it could be on the tipping point of something greater.  The Small Business Revolution seeks out America;s most inspiring small towns, giving the winners $500,000 revitalization and features the transformation on their TV series.  Amesbury is a finalist!

Take a moment to share via social media what you love about your Amesbury, perhaps including what makes Sparhawk so special to you.  Make sure to tag #MyAmesbury and #MySparhawk so we can share in the love!

Graphic Learning

We know that a child's development of emergent literacy skills begins early in life- as does the ability to represent physical characteristics in artwork.  Just as children are learning to view and understand graphic elements in their surroundings, they are also learning to understand the graphic elements necessary to create patterns of letters.

The Pre-k students were inspired to create multimedia faces after reading the book Faces by David Goodman and Zoe Miller. Students are challenged with taking a variety of tactile elements and combining them to create a legible face- much as they would create letter forms.  The more advanced a child becomes, typically the more detail is expresses in a face or figure.

This Week in Middle School Math & Science

Image

Middle school students are learning Geometry basics- the study and understanding of points, lines, angles and surfaces. They will then move on to find areas of 2 & 3 dimensional figures. Students will explore the application of geometry in real life during their applied math classes.

LEAP students are learning about the properties of matter including density, volume, mass and conductivity. their first lab was exploring polymer spheres, measuring the absorption rate and comparing it to the polymers evaporation rate. Next, students will graph and compare both rates.

Iceland Winterim

Here's a glimpse into a single day of our Iceland Winterim! Here's a relay from Upper School Science Teacher, Dana: Our first stop of the day was to Pingvellir (pronounced Thingvellir) National Park. Here we got to see the North American Plate and the Althing, Iceland's first parliament.

Our second stop was to Gullfoss waterfall- the woods were quite fierce which led to us cutting our visit a bit short. Due to the movement of the plates, Iceland is littered with volcanoes. (Ask us how to say Eyjafjallajokull) We traveled through lava fields until we reached the geysers. As scientists, we weren't satisfied with just looking at the surface of the geyser, so we managed to put go pros in one of them and captured amazing footage of beneath the surface.

Sparhawk parent, Damion Silver, joined two different classrooms to share his knowledge of shoe design and printmaking.  Damion is the Director of Mens footwear design at Converse and is a working artist as well.  First, Damion visited the middle school students showing them the many components of various sneakers giving them a hands on practica for their final Parkour Challenge deliverables.

Next, Damion made his way to the lower school to teach the upper elementary students about print making. The students had the opportunity to print with Damion's actual blocks and learned about composition and other valuable artistic lessons.  To learn more about Damion's artwork click here.

We love to have parents volunteer in or classrooms- if you are interested in sharing your expertise, please contact your school Director!

MIAA Student Ambassadors

Sparhawk students join the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association ambassador program. The program helps students who are already leaders in their community learn to plan and execute community service programs for their school. Initiatives include drives, fundraisers, service opportunities and any other community service engagements. Our students came back with fresh ideas and have been busy developing a plan to put in place for this year.
