Love Squad

Sparhawk School is excited to announce that we will be founding a Lucy's Love Bus "Love Squad" chapter for our 6-12 graders.  Students will have the opportunity to raise awareness of pediatric cancer and support local families affected by it.  Lucy's Love Bus is a non-profit organization working with children who have pediatric cancer.

Their mission is to:

"Deliver comfort and quality of life to pediatric cancer patients by providing funds for free integrative therapies, and to engage young people in activism and philanthropy through our Lucy's LoveSquadâ„¢ program."  Sparhawk middle school and high school students will be able to join our very own Love Squad and will also involve lower school students in Love Squad events throughout the year.

On November 17, Beecher Grogan, Director of Lucy's Love Bus, will give our community a presentation on Lucy's Love Bus.  This organization is particularly special to Sparhawk as Lucy Grogan, the founder of the organization, was a Sparhawk student who succumbed to Leukemia.  We are so proud that Sparhawk students are going to continue on supporting Lucy's legacy. Here is an introduction to Lucy.

Our first project was completed this week with students creating over 500 origami paper cranes that Lucy's Love Bus will share with their supporters.   For information regarding this program, please contact Kaitlyn MacDonald

HALLOWEEN HIGHLIGHTS

LOWER CAMPUS

Sparhawk's Lower Campus turned into a Halloween Celebration of Classroom Themes, Performances, a Festive Lunch sponsored by parents and a costume parade at the end of the day. Each class took on a theme: bats, spiders, pumpkins, ghosts, potions, Poe's Raven, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The rooms were decorated beautifully and somewhat scary! Children sang, recited poems, shared scientific facts and performed. A fine display of our students' talents and creativity.  LS Parents, Keep your eyes peeled for a longer Halloween email and slideshow!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Our middle schoolers really know how to get into Halloween.  Leading up to the big day, each student created a Ghosts of Ancient Greeks Past Tombstone that was on display in our graveyard.

High School students, Miky and Jacob joined the middle schoolers for super cool spooky science experiments including using dry ice to fill bubbles with CO2

Lee Ford

High School Humanities Teacher

Lee Ford graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Education and English. After graduating Lee moved to Boston and worked as an educator in the non-profit sector: exploring issues of environmental and social justice with Middle and High School students.

In the fall of 2017 Lee moved to the North Shore, and began teaching at Sparhawk. In class Lee aims to empower students to uncover their own voice and develop a sense of self within community. In keeping with John Dewey's philosophy of progressive education, classes focus on contextualizing subjects within the lives students inhabit right now, rather then in preparation for some distant future. Lee is grateful to have found an educational community like Sparhawk; one where students are curious, find joy in exploration, bring a critical eye to all stages of the learning process, and through that process, grow together.

When not teaching, Lee likes to grow food, to build things, and to go on long runs in the woods with dogs.

Sarah Guard

PreK Teacher

Sarah began her Sparhawk School journey as a parent six years ago when her daughter, Zoe, started in Kindergarten.  She fell in love with the school and when a position became available she eagerly jumped at the opportunity to teacher here.

Sarah is a passionate naturalist, whose personal values are completely aligned with the Sparhawk mission.

She seamlessly integrates the natural world into her academically strong classroom through experiential and hands-on learning. Her easy and kind demeanor is calming and her fun curriculum inspires the love of learning in our smallest students.

In her spare time, Sarah enjoys spending time with her daughter, caring for her pets, hiking, astronomy and playing the fiddle.
