Romance Languages

The Romance languages, as modern manifestations of Latin, are possessed of a unique connection to the linguistic foundations of classical civilization in the West.  Each language represents a significant culture, and each has contributed essentially to the transformation and evolution of the global neighborhood. Today they continue to shape our world through art, philosophy, literature, media, science, economics, politics, and more. Indeed, it is this universal quality that demarcates the Romance languages as powerful points of departure into the study of language itself.

Sparhawk School prides itself on offering to its students a positive and effective language learning environment. We emphasize the need to develop the skills of communication, which lead to success. Listening, speaking, reading and writing form the cornerstone of the Sparhawk program.

Language creates and supports culture, which in turn shapes language. Thus, the study of culture, as an integral part of the language learning experience, is de rigueur. Cultural studies are carefully interwoven into the curriculum, as a means of providing a more complete understanding of the target language.

Literature, where language becomes art form, is of particular interest to the student of language. Indeed, literature forms the backbone of most university language curricula. In order to prepare Sparhawk students thoroughly for the rigors of post-secondary study, literature and major literary figures are given particular attention.
