Oral Expression
This full-year course represents a thorough introduction to the Italian language.  It trains the student in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Although the basics of grammar are explored, the principal goal of this course is to strengthen the student’s ability to communicate effectively.

Oral Expression II
A second-year review of Oral Expression for those needing further development of their abilities.

Principles of Grammar
This full-year course constitutes an in-depth look at the grammatical principles of the Italian language. Firmly rooted in the broad vocabulary base mastered in Oral Expression, students are trained in the use of grammatical structures, enabling their thought process to move freely between present, past, future, and the theoretical spaces of speculative time.
Prerequisite: Instructor’s permission

Principles of Grammar II
A second-year review of Principles of Grammar for those needing further development of their abilities.

Advanced Conversation and Composition
This full-year course represents the critical step between theory and praxis. In-depth study of nuanced vocabulary is undertaken in order to strengthen communication in all contexts of expression.  The fine points of grammar are explored to master linguistic precision. Students read a variety of thematic texts, ranging from periodicals and cultural commentary to literary extracts and poetry. 
Prerequisite: Instructor’s permission

Survey of Italian Literature and Culture
This full-year course will consider the development of Italian literature and culture from the times of its Etruscan, Greek, and Roman past up until the present day.  A sampling of representative literary texts dating from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance through contemporary ventures in literature will enable the student to form a thorough understanding of the various cultural movements in Italian history.  The methodologies of literary exegesis will be emphasized.
