Languages, Literature and Culture

We speak our world into being.  Speaking is exciting, creative, and ever innovative.  We speak our world and listen to its echo reflected to us in turn in the speaking of another.

We write our world as art in word.  We read the art of others’ writing and discover there a world much like our own.

Sparhawk students learn both classical and Romance languages as a means of cultivating a more complete understanding of their own rich cultural heritage.  The study of Ancient Greek or Latin reveals the very foundation of Western Civilization and brings it closer to the students’ own experience, allowing them to find their own story within the context of our great tale. The study of French, Italian, and Spanish opens up a view into the experience of our cultural contemporaries and encourages Sparhawk students to engage the possibilities that are the fruit of international awareness.

At Sparhawk School, we celebrate living with and through language, and we exhort our students to pursue their studies dynamically. Multilingualism is an everyday component of the Sparhawk School experience. Many of our faculty and staff were born outside the USA or have lived abroad. They share their various experiences generously with their students, who thereby deepen their own cultural understanding.

Through their diligence and dedication, Sparhawk students come to be at home in their world, able to experience life through the many lenses that  multilingualism provides. We cultivate the ability to communicate confidently in the language of at least one other culture.  Students in higher-level classes will be able to decipher the texts of the ages, and they will enjoy the advantage of a multidimensional world understanding.
