Ancient Greek

Introduction to Greek
Using the text Eucleides’ World, this year long course is specifically designed for novices, with the end of exposing students to the fundamentals of English grammar and preparing them for more advanced study in the Elements courses.  The alphabet, pronunciation, aspiration, accentuation, fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary and basic reading skills are reviewed.

Elements of Greek IA
An introduction to Classical Greek, this two-semester sequence attempts to provide students with the rudiments of grammar and syntax, with the objective of cultivating a reading knowledge of Homeric, Attic and Koine authors.  Our text will be Balme and Lawall, Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek, Book I.  While most of our time will be dedicated to Greek grammar, syntax and vocabulary, we will also illuminate the significant etymological and linguistic intersections between this classical language and English.  Prerequisite: Instructor’s permission.

Elements of Greek IB
A second-year review of Elements of Greek IA for those needing further development of their abilities.

Intermediate Greek IA
Building on the foundations of Elements of Greek, this two-semester sequence consolidates the insights built up over the first year of study and integrates advanced grammatical and syntactical concepts with more extensive readings of ancient Greek authors, including selections from Aristophanes, Homer and Thucydides.  Our text is Balme and Lawall, Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek, Book II.  Upon successful completion of this course, students should be capable of translating virtually any Greek text if provided with a lexicon and reasonable glosses.  Prerequisite: Instructor’s permission.

Intermediate Greek IB
A second-year review of Intermediate Greek IA for those needing further development of their abilities.
