At the Upper School, our music curriculum is a natural extension of our arts and humanities studies.  Classes offered include song writing, chorus, music theory and band.  Students explore music in depth with special thematic considerations.  Students learn about abstract musical aspects such as tuning and tonal systems, scales, consonance and dissonance, and rhythmic relationships, but there is also a body of theory concerning practical aspects, such as the creation or the performance of music, orchestration, ornamentation, improvisation, and electronic sound production.

A Graduate of Western Michigan University, Zach received a classical music and Medallion scholarship, a jazz scholarship and the Judith Bailey Music Scholarship. While in Kalamazoo, Zach had the opportunity to study with Dr. Scott Cowan and Prof. Scott Thornburg as well as performing with such artists as Billy Hart, Stephan Harris, Darmon Meader, Fred Hersch and Ingrid Jensen to name a few.

Zach is in demand as a trumpet player and instructor. As a performer he can be found performing with the Soggy Po BoysMother Superior and the Sliding RoyalesSojoy and various projects of his own.  As an educator, it is part of the curriculum to know the history of the music taught, as well as to important to know the personality of the musicians we study.
